This Uberlicious Moment Is Brought To You By… Wayne’s World

Wayne's_World movie.jpgThis is about the time BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY came on while I was driving a couple to  JFK on their way back to France. I primarily listen to the R&B and hip hop stations Radio 103.9 and 107.5 WBLS when I’m in my car, but every now and again the oldies on 101.1 WCBS FM keep me feeling pretty Uberlicious, if you know what I mean! This was one of those moments. It had been a pretty easy ride, low stress since they were hours early for their international flight. I was quietly humming along to Tavares “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel” or The Bee Gees funk disco hit “Nights On Broadway”, as I tend to do, when the DJ went to a commercial break.

Next thing I realize, here come the a capella harmonies of Queen asking me “Is this the real life?  Is this just fantasy??? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality…” I perked up and glanced toward the backseat when they told me to open my eyes, look up to the skies and seeeee, but the French couple were unmoved. Emotionally, however, I went immediately into Wayne’s World mode! Let me add some perspective: There was a point one summer, I think it was right after I graduated from high school or following my freshman year in college, where I would literally watch my VHS of Wayne’s World at some point of every day. It was just that funny to me! (To tell the truth, it still is.)

Wayne's World headbangSo, there I was, driving down Atlantic Avenue towards South Conduit when the song from the infamous car scene comes on. You have no idea how hard it was to keep my composure and not go into headbanger mode at the climax. It really took everything in me to NOT lose it at the height of the third “…FOR MEEEE!!!!!!!!!” Because you know I wanted to!

Even though I resisted the full karaoke performance that I’m capable of delivering right there in my car, I did sing along and envision every part of this scene:

And, yeah, my passengers didn’t chime in, but I could tell that they sensed how excited I was to be hearing a favorite classic. But, as Frenchmen, they TOTALLY missed their opportunity to get involved in an authentic American cultural experience with me!
